What are some Causes for Suicide in India?

Suicide, The loss of every materialistic and non-materialistic endearment. A farmer, actor, doctor’s son, young girl, a whole family, there is no distinction since they are all humans. One can imagine a part of their pain and pity them for what they have done, reasons are unworthy. Suicide or its attempt to affect your family, friends, and your colleague too. As a part of the research for this blog, I was looking at the TOI website and it was arduous looking at those deaths. Dismayed by this sudden audience to suffering, I could only read the headlines until I finished that page.

WHO says around 8,00,000 people die by suicide every year across the globe. Whereas, for each suicide, there are more than 20 attempts. According to the National Crime Records Bureau, 2019, the average death by suicide counted was 381 daily, with a total of 1,39,123. It was 3.4% dearer as compared to 2018 with 1,34,516 cases. Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, and Karnataka are the top 5 states accounting for 49.5 percent of suicides in the country. In terms of education, only 3.7 percent of suicide victims were graduates and above.

You must have heard about farmers protesting against three newly enforced farm laws, media is overlooking them because they are busy advertising an upcoming World War (imaginary). I must say if they’re protesting for their rights, their issues must be resolved soon. If you watch the news, you may have heard farmers stating, “We are educating our children so that they don’t become farmers”. Suicide among farmers was highest at 18,241 in 2004, while a total of 296,438 farmers lost their lives since 1995, says NCRB.  Most of the farmers who committed suicide belong to Maharashtra, Odisha, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Chhattisgarh. As people are migrating towards industrial income sources suicide rates have decreased since then.

Some major causes of Suicide among farmers include-

  1. Failure of crops
  2. Property dispute
  3. Debt burden
  4. Price crash
  5. Failure of bore well
  6. Family problems (Dispute with the spouse, marriage of daughter)

Electric poles for high voltage transmission lines and highways are threats to a farmer’s lands. The government does pay them in return for their lands but how much they know about the business. Poor government policies, corruption in subsidies, and genetically modified crops of cotton seed which costs farmers a lot more than ordinary seeds put them in debt. Lack of secondary income or capital to invest in business endangers their survival. You can read some other reasons HERE.

If I hear someone has committed suicide, till now, in my village or close/distant relative, they were all women. The known reasons are domestic violence or argument among couples, big or small doesn’t matter. A drunk husband beating her wife for some irrelevant reasons or no reason at all will be a cliche for anyone’s knowledge. In the recent Bihar assembly election, women were the majority voters. This is the result of complete a ban on alcohol in Bihar bringing safety to women. Physical abuses like domestic violence, acid attacks, rape, and other ineffable actions are the main causes of female suicide around us. Is that why India ranks 6th in the world in female suicide?

It is always in the news that a single mother, in an isolated village, killed herself along with her children. This is because they are totally dependent on the male member of their family for living.  So after they lose their support, some choose to work for their life while others choose the inevitable. Most of the Indian villages still have that orthodox view about female remarriage.

Still, most of the cases get suppressed by their families as a mere accident, they are not afraid of the law but they do care about their status in society.

A boy asks his father to get him the passing marks in the exam, instead, he gets Rank-1, well money can make honey without bees. The obvious reasoning suggests that his career choice was not his own. This also affects the results of deserving students causing them to harm themselves.

A girl from MP lost her life because of some computer error, after revaluation, it was found that she had clocked 590 and not just 6 marks. It is difficult to face your parents/guardians where you have done nothing wrong but you’re still the culprit. Further criticism of our education system is of no use. From the NCRB report, one student dies every hour and 10,000+ student suicides were recorded in each year 2018 and 2019.

In between the age of 18-45 in India, some major causes are :

(i) Family problems

(ii) Marriage related issues

(iii) Mental illness

(iv) Drug abuse

(v) Love affair

(vi) Academic failure

(vii) Financial problems

(vii) Chronic diseases

Due to advancements in the medical field, suicide death from chronic diseases like cancer, HIV/AIDS have been decreasing since the late 2000s.

The recent death of Sushant Singh Rajput has brought mental illness and drug abuse into the limelight. Emphasizing Mental illness, a case was recorded in 2018 as a mass suicide of 11 members of a family in Burari, Delhi. Psychologists later commented that the family members were suffering from mental illness.

One can only hope and pray for your well-being and you, my friend, need to take care of your physical as well as mental health. WHO has numerous informative booklets for us about how to save someone from committing suicide. They have also launched e-learning courses on Engaging communities in preventing suicide. And are proud to say that suicides are preventable at any level from individual to national. Here are some WHO suggested prevent and control methods to follow:

  1. Reducing access to means of suicide (e.g. pesticides, firearms, certain medication)
  2. School-based interventions
  3. Introduction of alcohol policies to reduce the harmful use of alcohol
  4. Early identification, treatment, and care of people with mental illness
  5. Training of non-specialized health workers

You can also visit INDIAN HELPLINE.COM, where you will find helpline numbers and different support portals. Some of them support more than 15 different languages while HINDI and ENGLISH are common to all. On the other hand, local shops that sell pesticides and ropes are well informed about their use in harmful means. They refuse to sell such items of harm, if suspected, especially to youngsters or women.
